The Voice Signature Service relies on two inputs for verification: an identity claim and a voice sample. The initial voice samples, the reference data, are collected and authenticated. VSS receives a request for verification and both speech samples and an identity-claim from a user. The speech is stored in two formats, as the original utterance in a proprietary secure format and as a set of features extracted for comparison analysis. A comparison of the features of the reference speech data and the newly solicited speech sample is made to quantify their similarity. The "confidence score" is presented to the merchant. It can be used in combination with other business rules or fraud detection techniques to arrive at a decision on whether to accept the transaction and authorize payment.
